| In 1942, the Baldwin Locomotive Company delivered five 4-6-6-4 steam locomotives to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The D&RGW purchased these locomotives to speed up its freight trains across the system, especially between Minturn, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah. The railroad numbered the locomotives 3710 to 3714, and gave them the designation L-105, which represented the locomotives 105,000 pounds of tractive effort. The 310 was 120 feet long, had four 23” x 32” cylinders, 70” drivers, and a boiler pressure of 255 psi. The engine weighted 641,700 pounds, and when combined with the tender, the locomotive weighted 1,035,900 pounds. The 3710, which carried the Baldwin builder plate number 64178, was removed from service and scrapped in October, 1955. |
