| These commemorative cachet envelopes feature the special First Day Issue cancellation issued by the United States Post Office in Dayton, Ohio, and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The special cancellation design and Wright Flyer stamp commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Flight. “Elaine III” was flown by Capt. Jack “Johnny” Walker when he was assigned to the 97th Fighter Squadron, 82nd Fighter Group, operating in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operation. Flying the P-38 Lightning, he received Ace status with five confirmed air-to-air victories. He flew 51 combat mission over North Africa and Italy, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air medal with twelve oak leaf clusters, and the French Croix de Guerre. Captain Jack “Johnny” Walker, and artist John R. Doughty, Jr., signed each envelope. |
