James Swett Commemorative Covers

These commemorative cachet envelopes feature the special First Day Issue cancellation issued by the United States Post Office in Dayton, Ohio, and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The special cancellation design and Wright Flyer stamp commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Flight. 1st Lt. James E. Swett flew number 77, an F4F Wildcat, when he was assigned to VMF-221. On April 7, 1943, he flew his first combat mission off the Solomon Islands, and shot down seven Japanese Dive Bombers. He flew a total of 104 combat mission, and shot down 15.5 enemy fighters. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the April 7, 1943 mission. He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 5 Gold Stars, Purple Heart with 1 Gold Star, Air medal with 21 Gold Stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation with 2 Bronze Stars. He retired as a Colonel in 1970. Col. James E. Swett, and artist John R. Doughty, Jr., signed each envelope.

Swett, who received the Purple Heart with one Gold Star in World War II, and artist John R. Doughty, Jr., signed each envelope.
