Robert 'Catfish' Raine Commemorative Covers

(Covers come with a 'certificate of authenticity')

These commemorative cachet envelopes feature a special event postal cancellation for the Sandical Stamp Show and Philatelic Exhibition. The three-day show started on February 7, 2003, and featured a special post office, which used the Flying Tiger cancellation on all outgoing mail. The cancellation was kept for thirty days, after which it was destroyed, making the Flying Tiger cancellation limited and unique. Postal cancellations are usually not hand painted, making these cachet envelopes unique as well. Each stamp features the US Postal stamp of General Claire Chennault, founder of the Flying Tigers.

Flying Tiger #80 was flown by Flight Leader Robert J. “Catfish” Raine, when he was assigned to the Third Pursuit Squadron of the American Volunteer Group, also known as the “Flying Tigers”. He is credited with 3.20 air-to-air victories. He later joined the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC), flying supplies between India and China. He flew 443 hazardous missions over the Himalayas, also known as “The Hump”, until March of 1945. He was decorated with two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air medal, Chinese 3 Star Wings, and Chinese Cloud Banner. Flying Tiger Robert J. “Catfish” Raine, artist John R. Doughty, Jr., and the cancellation designer Mark Kirby, signed each envelope.
