Bruce Porter Commemorative Covers

(Covers come with a 'certificate of authenticity')

These commemorative cachet envelopes feature the special First Day Issue cancellation issued by the United States Post Office in Dayton, Ohio, and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The special cancellation design and Wright Flyer stamp commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Flight. Major Bruce Porter is a Marine Corps F4U and F6F Night Fighter Ace with 5 confirmed air-to-air victories, and four probables. He was assigned to VMF-121, flying the F4U Corsair, and had 3 air-to-air victories. After his tour with VMF-121, he was assigned to VMF(N)-542, flying the night fighter version of the F6F Hellcat, and was one of only six Marine night fighter pilots to score two air-to-air victories in one mission. Major Porter is the only Marine aviator to score double kills in both the F4U Corsair and the F6F Hellcat. He was decorated with the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold stars, Air medal with four gold stars, and two Presidential Unit Citations. Bruce Porter, who retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel, and artist John R. Doughty, Jr., signed each envelope.
