| These commemorative cachet envelopes feature the special First Day Issue cancellation issued by the United States Post Office in Dayton, Ohio, and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The special cancellation design and Wright Flyer stamp commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Flight. “Miss Ridge” was flown by Col. Herschel H. “Herky” Green when he was assigned to the 317th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, 15th USAAF, operating in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. His P-51, tail code 413498, carried the elaborate “Checkerboard Clan” paint scheme. Col. Green flew 100 combat missions. He is credited with destroying 28 aircraft, 18 air-to-air, including 6 in one day, and 10 air-to-ground. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air medal with 25 oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart. Col.
