| Lt. Col. Donald Cummings flew the P-51D Mustang (specifications) when he was assigned to the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF. He had 6.5 air-to-air victories, and on February 25, 1945, became one of only two pilots to shoot down two Me-262 jets on one mission. One year after graduating from pilot training, he was a captain and squadron commander. He flew with the 27th Fighter Group, 12th USAAF in North Africa, and later transferred to the 55th Fighter Group in England. He flew 150 combat missions. | ||

| 1. Drew the P51D Mustang in pencil. Painted black propeller blades & tires. Added green and yellow checkerboard pattern on cowling and spinner. Painted green non-reflective paint on cowling, completed cockpit. Painted the tail red, denoting 38th Fighter Squadron marking, and then US insignia. |
2. Painted in the aluminum color for the fuselage, & added highlights, shadows, and panel lines. Painted in CG-U on fuselage, 415192 on the tail, and “My Kitten” on the cowling. Added 6.5 air-to-air victory symbols. Added exhaust stain down the side of the aircraft. |
| 3. Completed the P-51, and drew the insignia for the 38th Fighter Squadron. Painted in insignia & signed. Col. Cummings signed the painting on May 23, 2004. | |
