| Lt. Col. Richard Asbury flew the P-51D (specifications) “Merle Maureen” AJ-S (463782) when he was assigned to the 356th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group, 9th USAAF, Criqueville, France. He initially flew with the 363rd Fighter Group, where he recorded 1.5 air-to-air victories, and three damaged. He scored 3.5 air-to-air victories while assigned to the 354th FG, making him an Ace. He flew 126 combat missions and he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 16 Air Medals. | ||

| 1. Drew the insignia for the 356th Fighter Squadron, known as the “Red Ass” in pencil on masonite board. Completed painting the insignia and covered it to begin work on the Mustang. |
2. Penciled in the P-51, and painted black wheels, propellers, and invasion stripes. Drew drop tank on wing bottom. Painted red spinner, and exhaust pipes. Added anti-glare green on top of cowling, and completed the cockpit. Finished US insignia on the fuselage. |
| 3. Painted in aluminum color on fuselage, and added AJ-S to side of the fuselage. Finished with shadows, highlights, panel lines, and exhaust stains down the fuselage. Added tail number, “Merle Maureen” to side of the cowling, and victory markings. I signed the painting, and Col. Asbury signed the painting on March 21, 2004. |
