| Captain Clayton Kelly Gross flew P-51B Mustang (specifications) "Live Bait", GQ-I (312451), when he was assigned to the 355th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group, 9th USAAF, based in Boxted, England. He completed two tours with the 354th FG, and flew 105 combat missions. He shot down six enemy fighters, including an ME-262 on April 14, 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 16 Air Medals. | ||

| 1. Drew in pencil on masonite the insignia for 355th Fighter Squadron, known as the “Pugnacious Pups”. Completed painting insignia and covered it with paper to protect it while I worked on the P-51 Mustang. | 2. Penciled the P-51, and then painted the black for wheels and prop blades. Worked on cockpit, the white spinner on the propeller, and white stripe on the cowling. Painted undersides of fuselage and wing. Then painted in US insignia. |
| 3. Painted in the green on the fuselage, then added shadows, highlights and panel lines. Added the GQ-I on the fuselage, and then the invasion stripes on the fuselage and wing. Next was the white stripe on the tail, followed by the tail code number. Painted in “Live Bait” on the cowling, and exhaust stains along the fuselage. Signed the painting, and Captain Gross signed the painting on March 21, 2004. | |
