"P-51 Mustang - Study 9"

Colonel Arthur C. Fiedler flew P-51 Mustang (specifications) number 35, which he named “Helen”, when he was assigned to the 317th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, 15th USAAF in Italy. He joined the 325th FS in April, 1944, and Herschel H. “Herky” Green was his Commanding Officer. He was credited with eight air-to-air victories and one probable, making him an Ace. He decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Medal with 22 Oak Leaf Clusters.

Progressive stages of painting development.


1. Penciled the P-51 outline and painted yellow on tail section, wing tips, landing gear structure and cowling. Painted red on propeller spinner and cowling, anti-glare green cowling, and completed the cockpit. Added US insignia, black tires, number 35, and props. Finished checkerboard pattern on wing tips, landing gear doors, and tail.	2. I painted in the aluminum color on the fuselage and wing. I added highlights, shadows, and panel lines to the aircraft, and completed the exhaust pipes. I added the air-to-air victories, and then painted in the nose art name “Helen” on the side of the engine cowling.

3. Added the exhaust stain down the side of the fuselage. Drew in pencil the 317th Fighter Squadron insignia. Completed the painting, signed it and took it to an Aces' symposium. Col. Fiedler signed the painting on May 23, 2004, and made a few small suggestions. I changed “Helen” from black to red, and modified the checkerboard pattern.
