Major Herschel H. “Herky” Green was the Commanding Officer of the 319th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, 15th USAAF, flying in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO). The 325th Fighter Group was nicknamed “The Checkerboard Clan”, based in part on the elaborate checkerboard paint scheme on the aircraft. Major Green flew 100 combat missions and is credited with 28 total victories, 18 air-to-air and 10 air-to-ground. On January 30, 1944, he shot down six enemy aircraft. His P-51 was number 11 (specifications), tail code 413498, and was called “Miss Ridge”. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air medal with 25 oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart.

Progressive stages of painting development.

1. Pencil drawing on 8” x 10” masonite board. Base colors yellow, red, green, and black added.	2. Silver metal color added, star insignia completed. Cockpit finished, then the landing gear. Finally, exhaust pipes and propeller completed.

3. Checkerboard pattern drawn in over yellow on tail, landing gear, and wing tips, and painted in black.
Highlights and shadows were added to the plane, then panel lines and rivets were added.
Herschel Green’s name was added to the canopy rail, then the 18 air-to-air victory markings.
Exhaust stains were added down the side of the aircraft, and final details completed.
