"P-51 Mustang - Study 3"

Col. Clarence E “Bud” Anderson was assigned to the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, and flew 116 combat missions. His P-51D Mustang (specifications) was 414450 (B6-S), and was known as “Old Crow”. He is credited with 16-1/4 air-to-air victories, making him a triple Ace. He was the leading Ace of the 363rd FS, and third highest Ace in the 357th FG. After the war, he was a test pilot in the United States Air Force, flying over 130 different types of aircraft and logging over 7,500 flying hours. During the Vietnam War, he was the Commanding Officer of the 355th Tactical Fighter, flying the F-105. For his service during World War II, he was awarded 2 Legion of Merits, the Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, the Air medal with 15 oak leaf clusters, and the French Croix de Guerre.

1. Pencil drawing on 8” x 10” masonite board.
Painted the red on the tail and detailed it,
painted propeller and checkerboard on cowling.
Started the landing gear.
2. Star insignia and D-day invasion stripe added.
Silver medal paint tested below cockpit.

3. Base silver medal paint added to plane.4. Highlights and shadows added to silver medal.
Panel lines added, then cockpit completed.
Finally, the exhaust pipes were done.

Final: Bud Anderson’s name added to cockpit railing,
16 air-to-air victory markings added,
squadron number and tail number added to plane.
“Old Crow” added to cowling,
then exhaust stains added down side of aircraft.
Proofed by Bud Anderson, one white invasion stripe removed,
signed by Bud Anderson and the artist.
The 363rd Fighter Squadron logo was then added to the painting.
