"P-47 Thunderbolt - 'Bunny' Comstock"

Col. Harold E. 'Bunny' Comstock flew this P-47D Thunderbolt (42-26413), (specification) which was called the 'Happy Warrior', when he was assigned to the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF in the European Theatre of Operation. He was the Commanding Officer of the 63rd Fighter Squadron in 1944, and he was an Ace with 5 air-to-air victories. He also flew the F-86 during the Korean War, and the F-100 during the Vietnam War.

1. Drew in pencil on 8?x10? masonite board
insignia for 56th Fighter Group and side
profile of P-47D. After completing insignia,
began work on the P-47D Thunderbolt.
2. Painted in black on wheels, propeller
blades, and red on front of cowling. Added
invasion stripes, blue on tail and camouflage.
Painted US insignia on side of fuselage.
 
Painted in grey camouflage on fuselage and added the 'Z' to the fuselage. Painted
underside, fuel tank and added shadows, highlights, panel lines, and exhaust stains
on side of fuselage. Added tail number, 'Happy Warrior.' and the victory markings.
Col. Harold 'Bunny' Comstock and Col. Walker 'Bud' Mahurin, who also is an
Ace with the 56th Fighter Group, signed the painting on March 20, 2005.
