P-38 Lightning “Elaine III” (specifications), was flown by Captain Jack “Johnny” Walker when he was assigned to the 97th Fighter Squadron, 82nd Fighter Group, operating in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. Flying the P-38 Lightning, he received Ace status with five confirmed air-to-air victories. He flew 51 combat missions over North Africa and Italy, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air medal with twelve oak leaf clusters, and the French Croix de Guerre. He retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Colonel, with 31 years of service. | ||
