F-6F Hellcat Studies |
The Grumman F6F Hellcat (specifications), was one of the most effective fighters used by the United States Navy in World War II. From October, 1942 to November, 1945, 4,403 F6F-3 and 7,870 F6F-5 Hellcats were produced. Pilots who flew the aircraft nicknamed Grumman “Ironworks” because the company built strong airplanes with an emphasis on returning the pilot back alive. Of the 6,477 air-to-air victories claimed by Navy and Marine Corps pilots, 4,403 were credited to F6F pilots. |
