The Vought F4U Corsair
(specifications), was one of the best carrier based fighter aircraft to see combat in World War II. It incorporated the largest propeller, and the most powerful engine ever fitted into a fighter, the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 “Double Wasp”. Due to the large propeller and the need to maintain a short, strong undercarriage landing gear for carrier based operations, the designers developed the distinctive inverted gull wing. Over 12,500 of the F4U fighter were produced, which flew in both World War II and the Korean War.
