"Passing in Review" |
| US Navy Blue Angels in formation near Mount Rushmore National Monument, produced for the Sundstrand Aerospace Corporation. On display in the main lobby of Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, San Diego, California. With the success of the Hamilton Sundstrand Aerospace 1996 Thunderbird "Teamwork at its Finest" wall calendar, it was determined that another painting should be done for the 1997 wall calendar. The main facility in Rockford, Illinois, took over the project, and I flew out from San Diego to meet with some of the people in the marketing department and talk with them about the project, as well as attend some training on a new technical illustration CAD software system. |

Original Painting 40" x 30" - Acrylic on Canvas |
| The idea of doing a painting featuring the United States Navy Blue Angels was approved, and I already had started a painting of Mount Rushmore in the snow, so the painting was easy to complete. The Blue Angles flying the F-18 Hornet (specification) in the Delta formation was what I chose to illustrate in the painting, and I began working on a rough draft of the formation. Once the rough draft was completed, I finished painting in the scenery and snow, and then drew in each of the F-18s. Once I had finished painting the six airplanes, I added the smoke trails, signed the painting, and then put a varnish coating on it to protect it. I then took the painting to a photo lab and had an 8” x 10” color transparency made, which was then mailed to the marketing group in Rockford. A total of 7,500 calendars were produced, and all of them were given out to customers and employees. When 1997 came to a close, some of the employees gave me their Blue Angel calendars to use for a special project. I cut the image of the painting away from the each calendar, and then mailed about 50 of these posters of the painting to the Public Affairs Officer for the Blue Angels, who knew what the posters were going to be used for. All eight Blue Angel pilots signed each of the posters and the Public Affairs Officer mailed them back to me. I then took these signed posters to the nurses at the cancer center at Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where they passed all of them out to children who were there for treatment. |
