"F-14 Tomcat"

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat (specifications) is a twin engine, variable sweep wing, and air superiority fighter capable of mach 2+ speed. Built for the United States Navy, the F-14 can track up to twenty-four targets simultaneously and attack six air-to-air targets with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile. There are three variations of the F-14 Tomcat, with the initial F-14A being introduced to the fleet in 1973. The F-14B, introduced in November 1987, was modified to incorporate the 27,000 lb of thrust General Electric F-110-GE-400 turbofan engines. The F-14D, delivered in 1990, not only had the F-110 engines, but also incorporated the new Hughes APG-71 radar system and new avionics.

All F-14 Tomcats have the capability to carry the LANTIRN targeting system that allows the “Bombcat” to deliver various laser-guided bombs in air-to-ground combat missions. Many Tomcats are equipped to carry the Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pod (TARPS), making it the Navy’s only manned tactical reconnaissance platform. The first two Navy fleet squadrons to receive the F-14A Tomcat were the VF-1 Wolfpack and VF-2 Bounty Hunters. VF-1 was decommissioned, however, VF-2, based at NAS Oceana, Virginia, continues to fly the F-14D.
